Light(s) – September 2026

Without light we wouldn’t have photography, noctography, perhaps? We asked our members to submit up to three images using or about light or lights. Sunlight, moonlight, light beams, street lights, table lamps – they’re all valid, and our members were certainly inventive.

Many of the submitted images showed how our members are fascinated by the way light fell on a scene or subject – the way it framed or highlighted it. Others focussed on the light(s) themselves, their colours and shapes, and falling into this category were photos featuring light trials.

And it was a light trail style photo that was voted the favourite by the members. We’re used to imaginative images from Jane Weston and her Light Painting photo, featuring swirls of colour framing a reflected glass marble was certainly that.

This month was an opportunity for members to submit prints in lieu of digital images. Once again a few members showed a print with the thought that they would then enter it into October’s Photo Show. With fewer photos to choose from, voting was quite close, with Alastair Bell’s Bathed in a Golden Glow – an atmospheric shot of a lighthouse partly lit by the rich tones of crepuscular rays from a setting sun.

There was no Image of the Month section this month, instead we showed the photos from our August Challenge of A Grand Day Out. As the title suggests we were treated to photos made by our members as they enjoyed outings, breaks and holidays. The subjects were many and varied, making it tough to choose a favourite. When the votes were counted it was the architectural marvel of the Tulip Staircase in the Queen’s House, Greenwich by Gerry McGovern that came top.
