Club Meetings & Events for 2027
We have four different type of meetings: Show and Tell, Knowledge Night, Photo Shoots and Click & Natter.
Show and Tell
Held every third Thursday, apart from August, these meetings are a chance to share and talk about our images and give and receive friendly, constructive comments and advice. Members may submit up to three digital images (and/or prints at some meetings) on that month’s theme and a single Image of the Month of any subject, taken since the previous Show and Tell meeting.
Meetings start at 7pm in the Village Hall, The Green, West Haddon, NN6 7AN, then at 7:15pm we start showing the images with a break midway for refreshments. Each month’s theme is listed below and guidance on how to submit images is at the bottom of this page. Non-members are welcome to attend two of these meetings free of charge.
Knowledge Night
Usually taking place on or around the fourth Thursday, apart from August, Knowledge Nights are a great way to increase your photographic skills, experiment, or just have some photo fun. They include tutorials, demonstrations and talks on various aspects of photography – some delivered by professional photographers – to opportunities to ask for advice or an explanation about anything photographic.
Meetings will be held in the Baptist Schoolroom unless otherwise advised and the list of subjects is below. Non-members may purchase tickets to attend talks by speakers.
Photo Shoots
We try to arrange a couple of visits a year to photographically interesting locations to allow for exploration and practice with like-minded people. Occasionally these are organised with other photo clubs which allows us to meet and exchange ideas and tips.
Click & Natter
This is an informal gathering of members who meet for a coffee at the Pytchley (one of the sponsors of our Photo Show) in West Haddon at 10am, usually the first Wednesday in the month. Discussion covers photography, previous and forthcoming WHPC club meetings and much else. The dates for these meetings are below.

January

21st – Knowledge Night – Finding the Beauty in Nature – Chris Upton
A new year, but not a new face. We welcome back Chris Upton to present another of his talks; this time he explains how to best capture the beauty of the landscape and the world around us.
28th – Show & Tell – Theme: Textures
Sometimes it’s how a subject looks, rather than the subject itself that attracts us as photographers. Wood grain, rusty iron, tree bark, amongst others, all have unique and attractive features, and we’re sure we’ll see many others in our Show and Tell.
February

18th – Show & Tell – Theme: Machinery
Welcome to the Machinery theme. This month we’re asking our members to show us their images of all things mechanical. The scope is enormous, as is the scale, from steam engines to watches, so we expect to see a wide range of subjects. This month there’s a print option – members may submit up to 3 prints in lieu of digital images.
25th – Knowledge Night – My Photographic Journey – Kevan Brassington
A founder member of WHPC and our erstwhile chairman, Kevan has some serious photographic experience. This evening he will be taking us through his photo journey, illustrated, we hope, with plenty of his images.
March

18th – Show & Tell – Theme: Black and White
Many of the most moving and memorable photos are in black and white; stripped of colour they allow us to concentrate on the subject. Conversely the lack of colour can also communicate a restful mood. With no restriction on subjects we’re looking forward to see what out members submit.
25th – Talk – Where I Photograph British Wildlife – Malcolm Hupman
Wildlife photography is a perennial favourite with many of us wanting to capture a memorable photo. To achieve this one of the most important elements is to know where to find wildlife. Malcolm Hupman points out that location, time of year and the weather will all influence what you are likely to see. Using images with location, date and equipment details Malcolm will help improve your wildlife photography.
April

22nd – Show & Tell – Theme: Animals
If you attended last month’s talk by Malcolm Hupman you will have known where to go to make a photo for this month’s theme of Animals. Our members are widely travelled, so we expect to see photos of charismatic macrofauna, but invertebrates are animals too, and more likely to be found in your back garden. This month there’s a print option – members may submit up to 3 prints in lieu of digital images.
29th – Talk – The Wider World of Photography, Part 3 – Ashley Franklin
Ashley Franklin is a regular visitor to WHPC and for good reason, we’ve left his previous two Wider World of Photography talks enthused, inspired and considerably better informed. He’s set the bar high for Part Three and we’re in no doubt he’ll deliver – we’re looking forward to it.
May

20th – Show & Tell – Theme: Signs
Signs: they’re everywhere. Useful, informative, bossy, bewildering, there’s plenty of choice of subjects for this month’s theme of Signs. Look for the bizarre, the defaced or the (unintentionally) amusing.
27th – Knowledge Night – Skills Surgery
Our Skills Surgeries usually cover a range of subjects, so it’s a great opportunity to ask the questions on how, why and what that can’t be addressed at our Show and tell meetings.
June

17th – Show & Tell – Theme: Street Art/ Graffiti
One person’s street art is another’s graffiti – brightening our environment or defacing it. This month’s theme of Street Art/ Graffiti at prove divisive, we just hope it generates some great photos. There’s a print option this month – members may submit up to 3 prints in lieu of digital images.
24th – Talk – Landscape Photography Thoughts & Techniques – Sarah Howard
Along with wildlife, landscape photography is one of the most popular genres. We’re pleased, therefore, to welcome Sarah Howard, a Cotswold-based landscape photographer, to give us a talk. As the title suggests, she’ll be providing us with her thoughts on how to approach this rewarding genre and the best techniques to employ.
July

22nd – Show & Tell – Theme: Broken
It’s broken – two words that often lead to feelings of frustration or disappointment. This month’s theme is challenging our members to embrace Broken- the dilapidated, the derelict and use it to produce up to three photos for our Show and tell meeting.
29th – Photo Walk
With light evenings and better weather (no guarantee, mind) we usually plan a photo walk for our members and those of other local photo clubs. This is a great opportunity to talk and exchange tips with other like-minded photographers. The location will be announced closer to the time.
August

August Challenge – TBA
There are no Show and Tell or Knowledge Night meetings during August, instead we have an August Challenge. This is where we set our members a theme and challenge them to take up to three photos in the period between our July and September meetings. The topic for this year will be announced closer to the time.
September

16th – Show & Tell – Theme: Power
One of the definitions of power is ‘physical strength or force exerted or capable of being exerted’. Does this help with creating images for this month’s theme? Possibly not, but by choosing subjects that imply this: e.g. waves, lightening, wind, it will convey the meaning. There’s a print option this month – members may submit up to 3 prints in lieu of digital images.
23rd – Talk – Through the Years – Warren Alani
It’s a pleasure to welcome along another new speaker to give us a presentation. This month it’s Warren Alani, a Northamptonshire-based photographer whose work has been internationally recognised. Warren will be presenting his ‘Through The Years’ talk, a demonstration of storytelling through the still image, featuring powerful and striking images.
October
6th – Click & Natter

9th & 10th – Photo Show
Now in its 13th year, this is our headline event of our programme. Photo Show provides a unique opportunity for local photographers to showcase their work to the public. There’ll be an exhibition of prints throughout All Saints’ church in West Haddon, as well as a rolling display of digital images.
14th – Show & Tell – Theme: Urban – Steel, Glass & Concrete
The built environment is the subject for this month’s theme. Many striking structures have been created using steel, glass and concrete (and many excrescences too). Sometimes it’s the finer details that are the most photogenic. We’re looking forward to what photos our members submit.
21st – Knowledge Night – TBA
We’re still in the planning stage for this month’s Knowledge Night. Details will be provided closer to the date.
28th – Open Evening
We’ll be opening the doors of our usual meeting venue – West Haddon Village Hall – and inviting in everyone who may be interested in seeing what we do. Members will be available to answer questions about the club and photography in general and we’ll have a rolling display of members’ photos.
November

18th – Show & Tell – Theme: Backlit
Backlit, or contre-jour (literally, against the light) is a photographic technique that can provide some dramatic images, and is our theme for November. Shooting into the light can be tricky and often results in very contrasty images with dark shadows, but it’s fun to try. There’s a print option this month – members may submit up to 3 prints in lieu of digital images.
25th – Talk – TBA
Planning is still underway to obtain a speaker for this month. When there’s more information it will be shared here.
December

16th – Show & Tell – Theme: Images of the Year & AGM
The last meeting of the year features members’ favourite three photos they’ve taken in 2027. There’s a print option this month – members may submit up to 3 prints in lieu of digital images. Instead of our usual Image of the Month section we’ll be having some festive nibbles and drinks. We’ll also hold our AGM.
TBA – Members’ Christmas Meal
An opportunity for the whole club to come together one final time this year to share a meal at The Pytchley.

Show and Tell Image and Print Submission Guidance
Digital Images
Up to four digital images may be submitted. Up to three on the monthly theme (see above) that can have been taken at any time, plus one Image of the Month that doesn’t need to follow the theme but must have been taken since the previous meeting. These images will be shown and discussed at the monthly meeting.
When submitting digital images please follow the points below:
- We prefer you to upload the images to Dropbox or email them to members@whphoto.club by 9pm the evening before the meeting. If you’re unable to upload or email you can copy them onto a USB stick or CD and hand them to a committee member before the cut-off time.
- Your images must be in JPEG format, smaller than 4Mb in size. If you need help resizing, have a look at our tutorial Reducing Image File Sizes with JPEG-Optimizer).
- The filename should be in the format 1_Name of Image_Name of Photographer, e.g. 1_Silver Machine_Dave Brock. Use the prefix 2 or 3 for your 2nd and 3rd theme images and IOM as a prefix for your image of the month.
- The images must not have been submitted before.
Prints
At the meetings when members may submit prints in lieu of digital images for the theme, please follow the points below:
- Up to three prints may be submitted in lieu of digital images.
- Prints must be securely fixed to a robust mount to allow display on a frame and labelled with the title and member’s name.
- Prints must be no larger than A3 (42cm x 29.7cm) with a mount no larger than 50cm x 40cm.
- They must upload a digital version of their print to the Theme Print folder on Dropbox by 21:00 the day prior to Show and Tell meeting.
- Submit their prints at the Show and Tell meeting by 19:15.
