In their song Street Life Roxy Music ask, 'who knows what you'll see, who you might meet?', which sums up our theme of Street Life pretty succinctly. There's always plenty going on and lots to see, if you keep your eyes open. And the human element always introduces an element of unpredictability.
We all interact with the street, even if it's a short walk to the car there's likely to be something to see. People walking, the buildings around us, how light and shade interact with buildings, Organised events are always a rich seam of material for the observant - not just how they interact with each other, but also the events itself.
We are perhaps most aware of street life when visiting places outside our familiar area, so other towns and cities and especially foreign countries Of course our members had all these bases covered with images taken in Britain, Scandinavia, Europe, India, USA and Asia. But it was a photo taken in mysterious and exotic Market Harborough that members voted their favourite - Andrew Jackson's Ladies and Gents - an image of a woman striding along with a pushchair, past the entrance to a gent's toilet.
Alternate months we have an extra theme round for prints to encourage our members to embrace what many consider to be the final step of photography - a hard copy of an image. Unsurprisingly there was a similar range of subjects, but the favourite print featured a deserted street. The viewers interest is held by its character - overhanging balconies and variously shaped doors and windows. This was Tony Teaugue's Via Forno del Duca.
The image of the month section, photos taken by members since the last Show and Tell meeting, unsurprisingly had an early spring feeling; a cornucopia of crocuses and seas of snowdrops. A couple of others couldn't shake off the Street Life theme vibe and had light-hearted subjects. One of the aims of WHPC is to help and encourage our fellow members' photography skills and following some guidance on focus tracking Graham Fowler visited Ravensthorpe Reservoir and took the most-voted for image of the evening - a marvellous photo of a group of Graylags flying just above the water.
