Often in surprising places and sometimes taking strange forms, sculptures and monuments are our theme this month.

It’s estimated in the UK of statues depicting historical figures over 80% were of males, did our members’ images reflect this? Well, no, they didn’t; their inventiveness meant they avoided that trap.

We saw a wide variety of figurative statues and busts, interspersed with sculptures and memorials. Some of the latter category were sombre monuments to sacrifice and bravery, other members had fun with the theme – a lovely shot of Monument Valley, for example.

Voting was widespread across the images, with many photos receiving a vote. However it was an imaginative viewpoint of Maggie Hambling’s evocative sculpture on Aldeburgh’s beach, captured in Colin Waite‘s photo , Scallop, Aldeburgh, that was the members’ favourite this month.

This month was a bimonthly opportunity for members to submit prints in lieu of digital images for their theme submission. Just three members took up the chance to do this and there was one clear favourite – Maelstrom by Alastair Bell an atmospheric black and white capture of a sculpture on a Normandy beach.

Our Image of the Month round contains photos taken since our last Show and Tell meeting. The subjects were wide-ranging, as usual, and there was quite a selection of fine photos to choose from, which made voting for a favourite pretty tough. This was reflected when the votes were counted; there were three photos tied for the top spot: Nowhere to Land by Judith Picker, Light Painting by Colin Waite and Eye Eye by David Kallmeier.
