Like any artform, photography can be used to hold up a mirror to life. Whilst we didn’t expect anything quite so profound, November’s theme of Mirrored did produce some thoughtful photos.

It’s always interesting to see how our members interpret themes. For this one broadly, there were, perhaps three ways: using a reflective surface to reflect the subject, effectively duplicating it, to show something not normally visible, e.g. around a corner, or distort the subject, creating strange or abstract images.

Unsurprisingly, there were many images that fell into the first category: reflective surfaces. Water, in lakes, canals and puddles provides an excellent way of mirroring subjects and creating pleasing photos. A couple of members thought outside the box and found subjects that were symmetrical, effectively mirroring themselves. However the favourite image of the evening fell into the last category. Tuba by Colin Waite is an example of great observation, spotting surroundings weirdly distorted in the bell of a tuba.

The Image of the Month section contained many photos with a distinctly autumnal feel to their subjects. The rich oranges and yellows of foliage this time of year featured widely, alongside other representatives of this time of year – poppies and pumpkins. It was, however, a stunning and colourful photo of a kingfisher emerging from the water, empty-beaked, that was voted the favourite – Pyer’s Tuckers Rats, Missed!
