Harlestone Wild Garlic Walk - 2nd May

January 12th

Spring brings the greening of our landscape along with blooming flowers and amongst the first of these are wild garlic. Their white petals scattered across the green of the woodland floor is most photogenic.

We recently made a visit to Harlestone Woods which is well-known for its display of wild garlic and weren't disappointed. After meeting in the car park of St. Andrew's church we made our way to the wood - following our noses - and were greeted by a white carpet of flowers. It seemed that the garlic was just about at its best and we were glad we had decided to bring forward our visit by a week.

We quickly spread out through the wood looking for compositions. A handful of us had tripods in case the light was too gloomy, but most handheld their cameras and coped well with the overcast conditions.

This photoshoot gave our members an opportunity to practise their landscape and macro photography techniques and to receive and share tips with others. A couple of members said it was instructive to see how others went about their photography and all said how much they had enjoyed their visit. It was great to make photos with others rather than just sit and view others' photos.

Afterwards we made a quick detour to the charming St. Andrew's church, then to the Fox and Hounds for coffee (honest!) and a chat.

Skills Surgery - Image Storage - 30th May

The importance of storage for digital images can't be overstated. When we used film we had physical prints, slides and negatives, but with digital photography there's nothing tangible and data loss is a real danger.

We may store our digital photos on our phones, memory cards, hard drives or cloud storage and each has advantages and disadvantages. We need to weigh up data security, longevity, durability and cost. How many copies should we keep and where do we put them? Remember, if we lose the image files we may have lost our photos forever.

In this month's Knowledge Night we'll be discussing various strategies for storing our valuable files.

A Learning Curve - A Talk by Justin Minns FRPS - 27th June

We're pleased to be welcoming back Justin Minns to present 'A Learning Curve'. Since his last talk to us he has become a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society - take a look at the beautiful photos he submiited for his Presentation Panel.

On his website Justin describes himself as, 'An award-winning professional landscape photographer - best known for my images of East Anglia - but my work takes me to many parts of the world, creating atmospheric imagery for clients including the National Trust, British Museum and English Heritage'.

About 'A Learning Curve' Justin says, 'Over the last few years I have become increasingly absorbed by landscape photography. This presentation aims to pass along some of the things I have learnt during that time, illustrated by plenty of images'. We're very much looking forward to it.

The talk is on Thursday 27th June in The Baptist School Room, West Haddon, Guilsborough Road, NN6 7AD - 7pm for a 7:30pm start. Non WHPC members are most welcome for £7 per person. Email events@whphoto.club for more details and tickets.

Make Your Own Photobook - 25th April

January 12th

If, like us, you've been taking digital photos for years then the chances you will have amassed hundreds or thousands of images that are sitting unseen on hard drives or memory cards. What to do with these photos?

Well, there are a few options: submit them to one of our Show and Tell meetings or better still print some of them and enter them in our Photo Show (next one's 12th & 13th October - so there's plenty of time to choose).

There is a third option and that's to create a photo book. This is a great way to display and show your favourite images. You can create a book of your best images of the year, of your pet dog, cat or hamster. Why not start a project photographing something that interests you and then collect those photos into a book? Fine, but how do you create a book and what can you do to make it look good?

Several of our members presented solutions to these questions and several more posed by those present at this Knowledge Night. Many brought along examples of the books they had prepared - software for creating books was demonstrated and the many pifalls were highlighted. The use of the photobook creation feature in Google photos was also demonstrated for those who want everything automated.

This was an informative evening for those who were thinking about creating a photobook and were puzzled about how to start.
